Blackberry Bling Nail Design

During Fashion Week, I read this article on Glamour.com about the “Blackberry Bling” manicure trend. Basically it’s the trend of having your Thumb be an “accent” colour or design, since it’ll stand out as you’re tapping away on your Blackberry device.
So naturally, I had to give this Nail Trend a whirl at my next Sakura visit.
Honestly I had NO idea what I wanted, but was just happy that I could get in with Megumi (after my last “solid colour only” nightmare).
I peeped this design as inspiration, but wanted it to be black (of course!):

→  NOTE: There are 2 Sakura Nail & Spa locations: UES & LES. Each location has different “accessories”.  The UES has 3D Acryllic Art.  The LES has nail stickers and Silver & Gold foil tape.
Megumi got started with a Biogel base + Black Calgel reverse french. Then she took the strip of gold tape and laid it across the lower portion of my nail:

After she laid down all the strips, she went back with embroidery scissors to cut off the excess from the sides. Like these:

Then came the bling! I put some on my ring finger and…on my Blackberry Bling finger!

Here’s the finished look!!

I think I took it a LITTLE too far with the “bling” on my thumb, but that’s the fun part about beauty — it’s whimsical and temporary!!  It’s a great reason to have a creative with it!

  1. Hi Amelia! Both Sakura locations have rhinestones in various colours, but only the LES location has the ridiculously oversized ones (like the center stone on my thumb). As for the Japanese Mags, you can try going to Kinokuniya http://www.kinokuniya.com. :) Hope this helps! xx, hp

  2. I LOVE it! This is actually one my favorites. The gold wire is something I’d want to try, and the lotus flower is so you!

  3. What’s a biogel base? I have a UV Gel top coat but they also have to use acrylic for the nail. This biogel sounds more health conscience 4 the nail.

  4. Hey Scorp1179: both Biogel & Calgel are a UV Gel that goes over your natural nail. It seems to be less damaging to your nails than Acryllic tips. Calgel is a little more ‘flexible’ than Biogel (so even less damaging).
In my experience, I use Biogel as a base coat, and it serves as a more secure base — ultimately there’s much less lifting as my design wears on. :) hope this helps a little!

  5. I like those a lot. Question for you (and you may have answered it before so sorry for asking again) – how harmful are these types of nails on your natural nails? I had acrylics a while back and finally my nails are back to normal.

  6. Hey Marisol! I’ve had other types of tips too: acryllic and silk wraps, and my nails were ALWAYS thin and worn to nothing. That was one of the reasons I tried (and stuck with) Calgel. When removed properly, your nails are just as strong (if not stronger, in my case) than before! :) I’m a huge fan (clearly!). :)

  7. Definitely a-ma-zing!! They look great!! I’m thinking of trying Biogel at my next appointment as the base coat too – my nails are getting really long now and I don’t want any breakage for when I bust out my crazy 30th birthday nails in a few weeks!! :)

  8. I read this entry and it gave me the idea for my “Liberty of London” nail design I tweeted you. :) And my nails do get noticed with the ‘BlackBerry Bling manicure’. :)
