Yoga Thought of the Day: Savasana, courtesy of Patrick Lynch

Had class this morning at Bikram Yoga NYC - Flatiron with Jaclyn Khan.  (today was day 40!)
During the first Savasana, she read this beautiful passage written by fellow Bikram instructor Patrick Lynch.

I used to practice with Patrick for years at the Bikram Yoga NYC – Midtown studio, and was SO thrilled to learn he was finally going to training to become a teacher.  After taking his class, it’s clear he found his calling.
Patrick’s classes are hysterical and so much fun. He has me cracking up the entire time.  But he also has a deep understanding of the postures and is NOT afraid to call you out on your bad habits, your exhaustion, or your laziness.
Jaclyn shared a beautiful passage he wrote about Savasana.  Apologies in advance for not getting it verbatim, but it was really special so wanted to share the gist:

Savasana in between postures is a chance to observe your thoughts, emotions and urges.  Often we want to fidget, move, adjust our hair, fix the towelwe want to do everything but just BE.
But the key to Savasana is the Stillness.  It’s the Stillness that allows us to OBSERVE and determine whether these urges and desires truly need to be ACTED upon.
This trains us to do the same in life: by practicing Stillness, we nurture the ability to discern the difference between what we WANT, and what we NEED in our lives.
This is one of the many values of the Stillness in Savasana…and also Stillness in our Lives.

Thank you to Patrick for the beautiful thought.  And thank you to Jaclyn for sharing it with us in class this morning.
It’s definitely a lesson I need to study harder.
Namaste.
