Hundred Acres has been around for a couple of years which – in NYC restaurant years – is an eternity. The saying “If you can make it here, you can make it anywhere” is really true.

Hundred Acres is owned by the same folks who own Cookshop (another fave haunt). Both restaurants offer a “Market” style menu, so they switch it up seasonally. They also use fresh, “market” ingredients and ultimately offer basic American comfort food.
If I had to describe a meal at Hundred Acres, it would be like an extra-thick, oversized, soft & plush cashmere sweater, sitting near a wood-burning fireplace with a cup of hot spiced cider. COMFORT.
The food is not inventive; there are no crazy spice-combinations, no fusion, no molecular gastronomy. Just simple, good ingredients. Wholesome food.
Here is a shot of their menu for October 21, 2009.
@erinmccaffrey & I went for an editor dinner, and here’s what we gorged on:

- House-made Semolina Macaroni, slow-cooked broccoli, chick peas, garlic and parmesan: A delicious pasta dish. The macaroni was on the thicker side, but well cooked & doughey. Broccoli was a little over-cooked (probably from being so slow-cooked), but the dish was flavorful and satisfying.
- Special Mushroom Lasagne: This was the best dish of the “appetizers”. Deliciously warm, savory. The tomato sauce was very “tomato” and not overly complicated with garlic or seasoning. The cheese and pasta were both fresh.
- Cauliflower & Brussel Sprouts Gratin, fondue & parsleyed breadcrumbs: This was not what I had hoped. Both Cauliflower (a member of the Broccoli family) and Brussel Sprouts can have a tendency to be “pungent”. The “fondue” was not savory or flavorful enough to mask the aroma and make a statement – it just tasted creamy. Overall a little bland.
- Bouchot Mussels, with romesco sauce & spice fries: @erinmccaffrey ordered this and she said it was incredible. The mussels were plump and juicy, and bionic in size.
- FRIES: Yes, they are as good as they look. Potato-ey, crispy and with the skins still on!
- All-Natural Sirloin Flap Steak, shoestring potatoes, roasted onions, salsa verde: For some reason, whenever we eat out for a work dinner, I always get a steak or a burger. HM. Steak was good – but you know me, I could always do with a lil’ more marble! The salsa verde was decent. Shoestring potatoes were reminiscent of Potato Stix, but homemade.
All in all, Hundred Acres always delivers a quality meal. But very “white people comfort food” – if ya know what I mean!
Hundred Acres also does a MEAN brunch with 5 different types of Bloody Marys, and THE most heavenly warm cream biscuits. Will have to do a post on that one soon!

Sounds like you had a great meal. You misspelled the word steak, in “I always get a stead or a burger.” The fries look extremely yummy. Great post.
Thanks Donna. Did you ever get my DM a while back about using photos from the site??
Yes. I did and I did credit those photos back to you.
DOPE! thank you!
