New York Fashion Week is upon us: September 10th – 17th. 10 straight days of backstage beauty, hosting editors, fashion and fabulosity.
It seems very glamorous, but for those of us working behind the scenes, it’s 12+ hours days of high-energy, placating personalities, facilitating interviews, arranging photo opps…all the while, running around in high heels.
Needless to say, NYFW involves a great deal of careful, copious planning. You can’t really say, “Oops! Sorry guys, gotta go and do some laundry. Peace out.”
So, here is my personal checklist for Fashion Week Survival:
- NAILS: I’m so happy I discovered Calgels, because they’re a perfect solution to the marathon that is NYFW. Unlike a regular manicure, a good set of Calgel can last up to 4 weeks! Plus, you can get some pretty dope designs to impress all the fashionistas.
- MAKEUP: No brain surgery here. A) I work for a makeup company. B) You’re running around backstage with some of the most brilliant makeup minds in the world. You makeup game’s gotta be TIGHT!
- BROWS: Gotta get your brows shaped. Especially because you don’t want to be chatting with a makeup artist backstage, and all you can see is them hypnotized by the unshapely, hairy beasts above your eyes. It ain’t cute.
- LAUNDRY: Must have enough unmentionables to last you for 10 straight days.
- CLOTHING: During Fashion Week, MAC Black is a must! So outfits need to be planned with care and attention. Picked up a nice addition at American Apparel to add to the wardrobe this season:
- SHOES: As much as I’d like to wear flats, the absolute VAIN truth: I feel really short in flats!! LOL. Plus, you see all the other fashionistas strutting around in stilettos all day, and you want to be one of the cool kids.
- HANDBAG: Find a bag that’s big enough to carry a day’s worth of schedules & supplies, but one that doesn’t look like an abomination. I really love Lululemon bags because they’re compartmentalized, roomy and kinda-sorta cute:

Lululemon Cross Fit Duffel
Check, Check, Check etc… Love it love it LOVE IT!!! This has motivated my black sequins dress dress, yellow pumps, smoked eyes w/ ardell demi 105 lashes; all for work tonite! Yes!
I would add some Primer Potion to the list – it’s one thing to have awesome shadow on and quite another to run around, get caught in the rain, and end up a smeared mess. Your looks has to last from 8am to the next day… make it last!
aaah – good point! I usually anchor my eyes with my Soft Ochre Paint Pot – but dying to try that one!
ooh girl!! sounds hot! did you take pictures!
